mummy dogs

Mummy dogs aren't just cute and creepy, they're also super yummy.

I am obsessed with Halloween food. Give me all the theme parties with food disguised as other things. Halloween is one of the best, if not the BEST, holiday for dressing up food. Think: chewy chocolate chip cookies with googly eyes, sushi that looks like Totoro, and of course, mummy dogs!

Imagine juicy hotdogs wrapped in strips of buttery batter and baked to golden brown perfection. Serve them with sweet and tangy mustard or ketchup for the perfect handy snack on your Halloween table.

What are mummy dogs?

A classic Halloween party favorite, mummy dogs are a version of pigs in a blanket, but with a fun twist. Instead of making a blanket out of puff pastry, it is cut into strips. The strips are wrapped around hot dogs and baked to resemble a mummy wrapped in bandages. When you add eyes, they are unbearably cute.

How to make mummy dogs

  • Cut the dough into strips. You want about 1/4-inch strips of puff pastry or crescent dough. If you're feeling especially industrious, you can even make your own pie crust or rough puff pastry.
  • Wrap the dough strips around the hotdogs, leaving a gap for the eyeballs about 1 inch down from the top of your mummy.
  • Place the wrapped hotdogs on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake in a 375°F oven until golden brown.
  • Removeput on some eyeballs and enjoy!

    Mummy Dog Ingredients

This is the best part: you only need 2 ingredients: puff pastry and hotdogs. If you're going to use eye candy, you'll need those too.

What kind of hot dogs for mummy dogs?

Your favorite brand of hotdogs will work best. The classic beef, pork, chicken or turkey dogs work. You can even go with mini smokies for mini mummies.

What kind of pastry for mummy dogs?

    • rising mass – the classic mummy dog. You can buy crescent rolls or crescent roll sheets. If you can find crescent-shaped sheets of dough, they work well because you don't have to stretch the dough or squeeze the triangle seams.
    • puff pastry – Puff pastry is delicious and will give you a slightly puffier mummy with a flaky, punchy bite.
    • Pizza dough – Pizza dough tends to bake thick and fuller. You can use your favorite pizza dough recipe or buy store bought dough.
    • cake edge – The cake batter strips are perfect for dog mummy cakes.

    how to make the eyes

I like to use candy eyeballs because they are so cute. Plus, they're so small that they don't really affect the flavor. You can also remove them if you don't want to eat them. If you don't want to buy eye candy, you can also put on mustard. Or, use a small cookie cutter to cut out the whites of the eyes from a slice of mozzarella cheese and use seaweed for the lilies.

    how to serve

These little guys taste great fresh out of the oven or at room temperature. Arrange them on a plate with small bowls of ketchup and mustard. Mummy dogs are also perfect in Halloween dishes.

If you are going to reheat the mummy dogs, be sure not to attach the eyes until after reheating. To reheat, bake 3 to 8 minutes in a 375°F oven or until heated through.
