Heaven Fitch is the first woman to win the wrestling championship

As a fighter, Heaven Fitch competes in the 106-pound category, but the teenager is very strong and dominates thoroughly. Heaven, a junior at Uwharrie Charter High School, became the first woman to win the North Carolina High School Athletic Association State Singles Championship on February 22. This came after fourth place the year before, WRAL.com reported.

High school girls wrestling is more popular than high school gymnastics, according to one Wall Street Newspaper Article that deepens the growth of women's participation in sport. Journalist Rachel Bachman, who wrote the WSJ Piece, USA Wrestling and nonprofits like Wrestle Like A Girl are pushing for more teams and competitions at the state level. But Heaven is not on a girls' team: it competes with the boys.

However, this does not mean that children must comply. As recently as last winter, a student lost his Colorado State Championship game to two women, citing personal and religious reasons. Last year was also the first time Colorado conducted a pilot program allowing state support of wrestling only for women, NPR reported. Despite this, the two girls in this Colorado championship decided to compete with the boys.

"I just fought my best and dominated the game, if I'm honest."

North Carolina wouldn't have made wrestling girls an officially sanctioned sport, so Heaven strictly went up against boys at their recent state tournament and swept every lap in their weight class. "I think it's fun, personally," he said in an interview with Fox 8 after the competition. "Everyone gets arrogant when they're about to fight a girl, and then she beats them."

Heaven would have finished the season with a 54-4 record and was named the most notable fighter in the championship. "I never would have thought about it," she said of her victory, thanking the people who have surrounded her throughout her journey. "I just fought the best I could and dominated the game, if I'm honest."

Heaven started fighting at the age of 6 after seeing her brothers clash, and she said Independent tribune in 2018 that her parents weren't too keen on the idea. "I'm pretty sure it was because they didn't want me to hurt myself. But I'd just say, 'Well, if they can do it, then I should be able to do it. ""

Watch the moment Heaven won its state championship above. She scored this victory with a flexible bicep and we couldn't think of anything more suitable for this record.
