What you will need to cook frozen chicken wings

  • Frozen Chicken Wings – For this recipe, I used raw and frozen chicken wings.

How to Cook Frozen Chicken Wings in the Air Fryer

1. Defrost frozen chicken wings.

Place the wings in a single layer in the air fryer basket and set the timer for 10 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once defrosted, drain the bottom tray of the fryer. Otherwise, your chicken wings won't brown either.

Note: This part is not a requirement. You can cook the wings in the air fryer even when they are completely frozen.

I only defrost the wings beforehand because I like to season them with salt and pepper before cooking.

2. Season the thawed wings.

Place chicken in a large bowl and toss with oil and seasonings. Make sure they are well covered!

Skip this step if you are air frying frozen wings directly.

3. Air Fry Chicken Wings.

Place the seasoned wings back in the basket, making sure they do not overlap.

Cook the wings for 10 to 15 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Flip them halfway so they cook evenly on both sides.

For frozen chicken wings without thawing: air fry at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20-25 minutes, turning halfway through.

Stick a meat thermometer into the thickest part of a wing to check for doneness. Cooked chicken has an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

4. Cover the wings with your favorite sauce.

Barbecue, honey garlic, buttered parmesan – take your pick.

5. Serve and enjoy!

How long to cook frozen chicken wings in the air fryer

Generally, frozen chicken wings will take 20 to 25 minutes to cook in the air fryer.

However, there are several dependencies, so it is difficult to find a single answer.

The first determining factor is how the brand of your fryer performs. Some air fryers run harder than others.

Next is the size and thickness of the wings. The thicker and larger they are, the longer they will take to cook.

The last thing is how crispy you want the skins to be. For extra crispy wings, add 1-2 minutes to your timer.

Ultimately, the best way to know exactly how long to cook frozen chicken wings in the air fryer is to make a test batch.

For fully cooked frozen wings

Some brands already cook chicken wings before freezing them. In this case, air fry the wings for 15 to 20 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Apply the same temperature and cooking duration to cook frozen wings in breading or sauce.

Tips and tricks

  • Your air fryer will not work properly if you overfill the basket. If there is not enough room for hot air to circulate, the chicken will not be crispy. Cook in batches if necessary.
  • Don't forget to drain any liquid that accumulates at the bottom of the fryer after defrosting the chicken. If not removed, that liquid will prevent the chicken from becoming crispy.
  • Be sure to flip the chicken wings halfway through cooking. This ensures even cooking.
  • Technically, you don't have to defrost the wings beforehand. You can air fry wings even when they are frozen. I only do it because I like to season my wings before they cook.
  • Do not season the wings while they are frozen. The seasonings will just drain away with the liquid.

Best Sauce for Frozen Air Fryer Chicken Wings

The best sauce is whatever your favorite sauce is! Whether it's barbecue, buffalo, honey garlic parmesan or Asian, as long as you like the sauce, you can't go wrong.

Whichever you choose, be sure to toss the wings well so every nook and cranny is covered in sauce!
